Tarragona will host the 2017 Mediterranean Games
24 countries will participate in 31 sports specialities
Tarragona will organize the sports Mediterranean Games 2017, after forcing the Egyptian bid of Alexandria in a vote carried out in Mersin (Turkey) on October 15th.
Games, which meet every four years athletes from 24 countries of the Mediterranean shore, will hold its eighteenth edition in Tarragona. They will be the third Mediterranean Games held in Spain, since the 1955 Barcelona and Almería 2005.
The games will open June 30, 2017 and will end on July 9. For an average-sized city like Tarragona, holding the Mediterranean Games has the same meaning, in terms of collective effort and international projection, as it would for larger cities such as Barcelona, Athens or London to host the Olympic Games.
Tarragona has all the values it needs to host a competition of the complexity of the Mediterranean Games. It is an open, friendly and hospitable Mediterranean city. With a legacy of more than two thousand years of history by the sea, its fine climate has boosted the rise of a wide-ranging recreational, cultural and commercial offer. Its golden beaches, its rich gastronomy and vast historical heritage invite the visitor to enjoy its fiestas, traditions and sights.
The Delegate of the Government in Tarragona, Joaquin Nin, has welcomed the appointment of Tarragona as the site of the Mediterranean Games 2017. 'It's an opportunity to demonstrate and export potential has Tarragona and the whole territory. We have many assets to promote, and games should be an opportunity to make them public yet.' The Tarragona Major, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, has said 'this is a winning project in which the Catalan, Spanish and municipal governments have collaborated, together with the Spanish Olympic Committee. This is an important turning point in the life and history of our city. Congratulations to all the sub-venues”.
Tarragona 2017 will hold Mediterranean Games that extend to other well communicated towns in the region known as Camp de Tarragona, the vast majority located just a few kilometres from Tarragona city. By doing so, the impact of the Games will be multiplied as regards the involvement of the surrounding territory, and structural improvements. Moreover, the project incorporates the experience of Barcelona and Castelldefels in the Olympic Games of 1992 for the organisation of specific events such as show jumping, canoeing and rowing. In addition to Tarragona, there are a further twelve towns that will be able to enjoy the experience of the 2017 Mediterranean Games: Barcelona, Calafell, Cambrils, Castelldefels, el Vendrell, Reus, Salou, Vila-Seca, Constantí, la Selva del Camp and Torredembarra.
